Documenting the History of Tattoo one Mark at a Time
Tattoo Anthropologist / Author / Curator

Marked for Life is our beautiful new exhibition on Marked for Life is our beautiful new exhibition on Indigenous tattoo heritage and history across Asia (and elsewhere) that also encompasses the incredible weaving and ancient marking traditions of the Li People of Hainan Island.

The exhibition officially opens to the public this Tuesday September 26 with special events and lectures slated for the weekend of October 24-25.

The exhibition would not have been possible without co-curator Emily Shen's @emilyshen.doc vision, passion, dedication and sacrifice to bring everything together and visitors will be able to see her groundbreaking documentary on Li tattooing, including interviews with one of the last living tattoo artists - Meifu practitioner Fu LianMei of Baobai village. Also, the collaboration of gallerist, scholar and independent textile collector Gao Yu (@manaspace.art )allowed us to display many exquisite Li weavings never seen before in a public setting. These cultural treasures complement the visionary works of Hainan-based photographer Hu Yaling who has focused her lens on the last generation of Li tattoo bearers for more than 30 years.

We are also honored to feature the visionary photography of our friend Jens Uwe Parkitny @jensburma (Chin tattoos of Myanmar), the work and inspirational talents of Paiwan tattoo cultural practitioner Cudjuy Patjidres (@cudjuy_tattoo ), and a powerful large format work of @shatabdi_chakrabarti focusing her lens on Rabari tattooing in India.

Kudos and massive thanks goes to Director Lin and staff of the @shungyemuseum for providing us with a beautiful venue and support, and we look forward to seeing you all soon in Taipei!

@emilyshen.doc and I have been working hard the la @emilyshen.doc and I have been working hard the last year to bring this special photographic and textile exhibition to the @shungyemuseum in Taipei that features an important private collection of incredibly beautiful textiles created by Li weavers on Hainan Island (China), Emily's new documentary film on the last generation of tattooed Li woman (incl. a 96-year-old Meifu tattoo practitioner), stunning photography of Chin tattooing in Myanmar by @jensburma and a selection of large format portraits by yours truly from across Asia. Did I mention the museum also has a collection of Indigenous tattooing tools from Taiwan?!

Our good friend Paiwan tattoo artist @cudjuy_tattoo is also featured via documentary film and special presentations on 10/25. And we will also present the amazing photography of Hu Yaling who has been documenting Li tattooing for more than 30 years.

'Marked for Life' opens 9/22 and runs through 11/30.

We hope you can make the journey to Taipei and on 10/24 I will present a special lecture followed by book signings afterwards.

See you soon!
