Documenting the History of Tattoo one Mark at a Time

@emilyshen.doc and I have been working hard the la @emilyshen.doc and I have been working hard the last year to bring this special photographic and textile exhibition to the @shungyemuseum in Taipei that features an important private collection of incredibly beautiful textiles created by Li weavers on Hainan Island (China), Emily's new documentary film on the last generation of tattooed Li woman (incl. a 96-year-old Meifu tattoo practitioner), stunning photography of Chin tattooing in Myanmar by @jensburma and a selection of large format portraits by yours truly from across Asia. Did I mention the museum also has a collection of Indigenous tattooing tools from Taiwan?! Our good friend Paiwan tattoo artist @cudjuy_tattoo is also featured via documentary film and special presentations on 10/25. And we will also present the amazing photography of Hu Yaling who has been documenting Li tattooing for more than 30 years. 'Marked for Life' opens 9/22 and runs through 11/30. The line-up of presenters, including Dr. Sean Mallon (@irish_uso) of the Te Papa Museum (NZ) and cultural tattoo practitioners (@suluape_keone @melanesianmarks @cudjuy_tattoo ... ) is legendary and for more details please visit @national_museum_of_prehistory Earlier that week on October 24-25, I will be co-hosting special events surrounding a new exhibition at the @shungyemuseum in Taipei focusing on Indigenous tattooing and textiles. From Hainan Island to Taiwan, Nagaland to Myanmar and beyond, you will have the opportunity to experience the incredible weaving and tattooing of the Li people, special lectures, photography and book signings (that would be me!) focusing on the tattoo traditions of Asia, a screening of Emily Shen's (@emilyshen.doc) new documentary on Li tattooing of Hainan Island, exquisite large format photography of Chin tattooing by Jens Uwe Parkitny (@jensburma) and a special presentation on Paiwan tattooing by Cudjuy Patjidres (@cudjuy_tattoo). Humbled to have been invited to contribute some of Humbled to have been invited to contribute some of my photography to the TATAU – FREEDOM | IDENTITY | MEMORY exhibition which is now open at the @varldskulturmuseet in Gothenburg, Sweden. ☮️ This visionary photographic exhibition explores the women's role in tattoo history - both as carriers of tradition and as active agents in the renewal and reawakening of this ancient cultural practice. ☮️ Tattoos are one of humanity’s oldest forms of expression, and throughout history they have been used to mark identity, life transitions, spirituality, and social belonging.
